Sérgio iniciou a sua carreira em Moçambique, nos anos 1960, onde era conhecido como o Gene Rockwell moçambicano, alusão a um conhecido cantor sul africano.
A dupla Sérgio & Madi, gravou vários discos pela gravadora Phonogram, atual Universal, tais como, Espadas nuas e My only one.
Posteriormente, em 1976, foram produtores da companhia discográfica Imavox. Durante essa etapa profissional, ouviram e contrataram diversas bandas musicais, que fizeram sucesso no mercado de língua portuguesa.
Em seguida se mudaram para a editora Rossi e é dessa época o sucesso Cry to Me, que também teve uma versão de Sérgio Wonder, em português, chamada Chora por Mim.
