O Slits surgiu em Londres em outubro de 1976. Inicialmente, era uma formação exclusivamente feminina: a vocalista Ariane "Ari Up" Forster e a baterista Paloma "Palmolive" Romero se conheceram em um show de Patti Smith e, por unanimidade, decidiram formar sua própria banda. Vamos dar uma olhada mais de perto. Ari Up, natural da Alemanha, vinha de uma família intimamente ligada à música. Seu avô era dono do jornal alemão "Der Tagesspiegel", seu pai era um cantor de sucesso, os amigos de sua mãe incluíam Jimi Hendrix e Chris Spedding, e seus padrinhos eram o compositor e cantor australiano Udo Jürgens e o vocalista do Yes, Jon Anderson. A mãe de Ari se casaria mais tarde com John Lydon, mas essa é outra história. Palmolive nasceu na Espanha, mas se mudou para Londres aos 17 anos. Por um tempo, seu namorado foi Joe Strummer. Segundo a lenda, a música do single de estreia do The 101'ers, "Keys To Your Heart", é dedicada a Palmolive. Por um tempo, Paloma foi baterista da banda semi-mítica "Flowers of Romance", que contava com a participação de todos, incluindo Sid Vicious. Este último tentou se aproximar de Palmolive, mas, após ser rejeitado, a expulsou da banda. É bem interessante, mas voltemos ao The Slits . Palmolive convidou sua amiga Kate Corris para tocar guitarra, e Suzy Gutsy foi escolhida para tocar baixo. Em 1977-1978, a banda se apresentou bastante, incluindo turnês com The Clash, Buzzcocks, Jam, Prefects e Subway Sect. Durante esse período, Viv Albertine substituiu Kate Corris na guitarra, e Tessa Pollitt começou a tocar baixo. Em 1978, Palmolive também deixou o The Slits, e Peter Clarke "Budgie" assumiu seu lugar. Em setembro de 1979, foi lançado o álbum de estreia "Cut", que mais tarde se tornou um clássico do gênero, mas na época alcançou a 30ª posição nas paradas britânicas. Era um pós-punk ligado ao reggae, ao dub e à música étnica. Em 1980, Bruce Smith, baterista do The Pop Group, assumiu a bateria. O segundo álbum, ainda mais experimental, "Return of the Giant Slits", foi lançado pelo grupo em outubro de 1981, e alguns meses depois eles se separaram. Em 2005, Ari Up e Tessa Pollitt reviveram o The Slits e, em 2009, lançaram seu terceiro álbum, "Trapped Animal". O grupo finalmente encerrou suas atividades em 2010, devido à morte de Ari Up (20 de outubro de 2010).
