Donald Walbridge Shirley, nascido em 29 de janeiro de 1927, em Pensacola, Flórida, filho de Stella Gertrude (1903-1936), professora, e Edwin S. Shirley (1885-1982), padre episcopal, foi um notável pianista e compositor de música clássica e jazz, cuja trajetória musical foi verdadeiramente única. Filho de imigrantes jamaicanos, o talento excepcional de Shirley se manifestou desde muito jovem. Aos três anos de idade, já tocava órgão, e sua educação musical inicial lançou as bases para uma carreira extraordinária.
A formação musical de Shirley foi extensa e diversificada. Ele estudou na Prairie View A&M University, na Virginia State University e na Catholic University of America, onde se formou em música em 1953. Apesar de enfrentar barreiras raciais significativas, o imenso talento e a determinação de Shirley o levaram a se apresentar com orquestras de prestígio, incluindo a Orquestra Sinfônica de Boston e a Orquestra Filarmônica de Londres, ainda jovem.
