Fruit Eating Bears

 

Os Fruit Eating Bears, de Croydon, iniciaram sua trajetória musical no final de 1976 sob o nome de  Tricycle Turds . A banda começou a se apresentar ativamente em meados de 1977, época em que o nome já havia sido alterado para  The Fruit Eating Bears , ou melhor, roubado de uma antiga banda de Liverpool dos anos 60. Inicialmente um quarteto, o baterista e vocalista logo saíram, deixando apenas o baixista (Garry Croudace) e o guitarrista (Neville Crozier). Os integrantes não hesitaram e rapidamente encontraram um novo baterista: Chris "Crash" Penhale, com Neville assumindo os vocais. Os Fruit Eating Bears rapidamente explodiram na cena punk londrina, tocando em casas de shows como The Vortex, 100 Club, Red Cow, The Sundown e similares, e dividindo o palco com bandas como The Clash, The Damned, The Adverts e outros nomes importantes do gênero. A banda chamou a atenção do produtor de sucesso Vic Maile e, em 1978, lançou dois singles. "Chevy Heavy" foi lançado pela Lightning Records em 24 de fevereiro de 1978 e logo alcançou o 5º lugar na parada da revista Sounds. Maile, em tom de brincadeira, inscreveu uma faixa do segundo single, "Door In My Face", na seleção para o Festival Eurovisão da Canção. Naturalmente, os Fruit Eating Bears não se classificaram, mas conseguiram alguma exposição na BBC. No verão de 1978, Garry decidiu deixar a banda. Os Fruit Eating Bears tentaram se manter ativos, gravando e se apresentando até o fim, mas, no final do ano, encerraram suas atividades.
