Segundo disco do grande compositor ex Soft Machine lançado em 1970 e com uma super banda que tinha os músicos de vanguarda como o saxofonista Lol Coxhill e o arranjador e multi – instrumentista  David Bedford assim como o jovem (na época) e ainda desconhecido Mike Oldfield que toca baixo e guitarra de forma virtuosa e criativa.

O disco se divide em canções belas como May I e Red Green and You Blue (meio bossa nova)  e em experimentações avant garde como Pisser Dans un Violon e Underwater.

Músicas como Rheinhardt & Geraldine são mais progressivas e lembram um pouco King Crimson e o trabalho anterior dele com o Soft Machine, inclusive tem duas canções que eram do repertório da primeira fase da banda no caso a faixa que dá nome ao disco (Shooting at the Moon ) e a faixa Clarice in Wonderland que vêm de bônus.

O disco originalmente tinha 9 faixas, as 5 faixs restantes são da versão do cd lançado em 2003 e saíram em singles como Gemini Child ou ficaram arquivadas.
