Apesar de lançar apenas um LP, os Estados Unidos da América estavam entre as bandas mais revolucionárias
do final dos anos 60, fundamentada igualmente na psicodelia e na vanguarda, sua música evitou guitarras em favor de cordas, teclados e eletrônica assombrosa, antecedendo o pop ambiente da era moderna por várias décadas. Os Estados Unidos da América foram liderados pelo compositor e tecladista Joseph Byrd, um nativo do Kentucky criado em Tucson, AZ; lá ele apareceu com uma série de bandas de rock e country enquanto cursava o ensino médio, posteriormente tocando vibrafone em uma roupa de jazz como aluno da Universidade do Arizona.
Apesar de ganhar uma bolsa para estudar música em Stanford, Byrd mudou-se para Nova York, intrigado
pelos experimentos de vanguarda que emergiam da cena musical do centro da cidade; lá, ele começou a ganhar renome internacional por suas próprias composições, ao mesmo tempo em que trabalhava como maestro, arranjador, produtor associado e assistente do crítico Virgil Thomson.
Byrd finalmente retornou à costa oeste, aceitando uma posição de professor assistente na UCLA e
mudando-se para uma comunidade à beira-mar povoada por um grupo de estudantes de pós-graduação, artistas e músicos indianos. Ele logo começou a estudar acústica, psicologia e música indiana, mas rapidamente voltou à composição experimental, deixando a universidade no verão de 1967 para escrever música em tempo integral e produzir "happenings".
" Para executar suas novas canções, material inspirado em grande parte pelos sons psicodélicos produzidos durante o Verão do Amor, Byrd recrutou um grupo de estudantes da UCLA (a vocalista Dorothy Moskowitz, o baixista Rand Forbes, o violinista elétrico Gordon Marron e o baterista Craig Woodson) para formar os Estados Unidos da América; o único LP autointitulado do grupo, produzido por David Rubinson, foi gravado para a CBS em 1968, seu ambiente único devido em grande parte ao uso pioneiro do modulador de anel, um sintetizador primitivo mais tarde popularizado pelo som Krautrock.
