A lendária estação de rádio pirata que transmitiu pela primeira vez em 28 de março de 1964, comemorou seu aniversário com uma transmissão especial de três dias. A rádio pirata no Reino Unido tem sido um meio de rádio popular e duradouro desde a década de 1960, apesar das expansões na transmissão licenciada e do advento do rádio digital e do rádio pela internet. Embora tenha atingido o pico ao longo da década de 1960 e novamente durante as décadas de 1980/1990, ela continua existindo até hoje. Tendo passado da transmissão de navios no mar para blocos de torres em cidades e vilas do Reino Unido, em 2009 o regulador de transmissão do Reino Unido Ofcom estimou que mais de 150 estações de rádio piratas ainda estavam operando.
A rádio pirata no Reino Unido se tornou difundida pela primeira vez no início dos anos 1960, quando estações de música pop como a Radio Caroline e a Radio London começaram a transmitir em ondas médias para o Reino Unido a partir de navios offshore ou fortes marítimos desativados. Na época, essas estações não eram ilegais porque estavam transmitindo de águas internacionais. As estações foram criadas por empreendedores e entusiastas da música para atender à crescente demanda por música pop e rock, que não era atendida pelos serviços da BBC Radio.
A primeira estação de rádio pirata britânica foi a Radio Caroline, que começou a transmitir de um navio na costa de Essex em 1964. Em 1967, dez estações de rádio pirata estavam transmitindo para uma audiência diária estimada de 10-15 milhões. DJs influentes de rádio pirata incluíam John Peel, Tony Blackburn, Kenny Everett, Johnnie Walker, Tony Prince, Emperor Rosko e Spangles Muldoon.

Em reação à popularidade da rádio pirata, a BBC Radio foi reestruturada em 1967, estabelecendo a BBC Radio 1, Radio 2, Radio 3 e Radio 4. Vários DJs da recém-formada Radio 1 vieram de estações piratas.
