Os americanos os conhecem como The English Beat , os australianos como The British Beat , mas, na verdade, o nome original do grupo era simplesmente The Beat . A banda de ska Two-Tone foi formada em Birmingham em 1978. A banda era composta por: Dave Wakeling (vocal, guitarra), Ranking Roger (vocal), Andy Cox (guitarra), David Steele (baixo), Everett Morton (bateria) e Saxa, também conhecido como Lionel Augustus Martin (saxofone). O single de estreia, "Tears Of A Clown", foi lançado pela Two-Tone Records em 1979. O álbum foi lançado simultaneamente na Alemanha, nos EUA (como The English Beat ), na Itália, na Irlanda, em Portugal e na Austrália, e um pouco mais tarde, em 1980, foi lançado na França e na Holanda. Nada mal para um trabalho de estreia. Depois disso, os músicos decidiram lançar seus trabalhos subsequentes por meio de seu próprio selo, chamado Go-Feet Records. O álbum de estreia da banda, "I Just Can't Stop It", foi lançado em 23 de maio de 1980 e alcançou o terceiro lugar na parada de álbuns do Reino Unido. A banda permaneceu ativa até 1983, lançando três álbuns completos, diversos singles e realizando turnês mundiais com artistas como David Bowie, The Clash, The Police, The Pretenders, REM, The Specials e Talking Heads.
