O Goober Patrol formou-se em Norwich no final da década de 1980, claramente influenciado pela cena americana. Gravaram sua primeira demo em maio de 1988, após o que o vocalista Gary deixou a banda, transformando-a em um trio: o baixista Ian Clithero, o baterista Stuart Sandall e o vocalista/guitarrista Simon Sandall. A banda teve uma primeira metade da década de 1990 bem-sucedida e turbulenta, excursionando com o Green Day e o The Mr. T Experience, lançando dois álbuns e participando de duas coletâneas de sete álbuns com os compatriotas do Vehicle Derek, os americanos do The Mr. T Experience, os alemães do Gigantor e a banda japonesa Sprocket Wheel. Não surpreendentemente, a banda logo chamou a atenção de Fat Mike, do NoFX, resultando no lançamento do terceiro álbum do Goober Patrol, "Vacation", pela Fat Wreck Chords. Nessa época, Tim Snelson (guitarra) juntou-se à banda e, pouco depois, o novo baixista Tom Blyth chegou. A banda logo se tornou presença frequente nos Estados Unidos. O último lançamento deles, um split com o 7 Day Conspiracy, saiu em 2014.
