O grupo The Slits formou-se em Londres, em outubro de 1976. Inicialmente, era um banda composta apenas por mulheres: a vocalista Ariane "Ari Up" Forster e a baterista Paloma "Palmolive" Romero se conheceram em um show da Patti Smith e decidiram, por unanimidade, formar sua própria banda. Vamos conhecer melhor suas personalidades. Ari Up, natural da Alemanha, vinha de uma família profundamente ligada à música. Seu avô era dono do jornal alemão Der Tagesspiegel, seu pai era um cantor popular de schlager, sua mãe tinha como amigos Jimi Hendrix e Chris Spedding, e seus padrinhos foram o compositor e cantor australiano Udo Jürgens e o vocalista do Yes, Jon Anderson. A mãe de Ari se casaria mais tarde com John Lydon, mas essa é outra história. Palmolive nasceu na Espanha, mas se mudou para Londres aos 17 anos. Por um tempo, namorou Joe Strummer. Reza a lenda que a música "Keys To Your Heart", do primeiro single do The 101'ers, é dedicada a Palmolive. Por um tempo, Paloma foi baterista da banda quase mítica Flowers of Romance, que contava com integrantes como Sid Vicious e Sid. Vicious tentou se aproximar de Palmolive, mas, ao rejeitá-la, a expulsou da banda. Curiosamente, voltando ao The Slits , Palmolive recrutou sua amiga Kate Corris para tocar guitarra e Suzy Gutsy para o baixo. A banda fez muitas apresentações entre 1977 e 1978, incluindo turnês com The Clash, Buzzcocks, Jam, Prefects e Subway Sect. Nesse período, Viv Albertine substituiu Kate Corris na guitarra e Tessa Pollitt entrou para a banda como baixista. Em 1978, Palmolive também deixou o The Slits e Peter "Budgie" Clarke assumiu seu lugar. Em setembro de 1979, a banda lançou seu álbum de estreia, "Cut", que mais tarde se tornaria um clássico do gênero, mas que na época alcançou apenas a 30ª posição nas paradas do Reino Unido. Era um som pós-punk, com influências de reggae, dub e música étnica. Em 1980, Bruce Smith, baterista do The Pop Group, assumiu a bateria. A banda lançou seu segundo álbum, ainda mais experimental, "Return of the Giant Slits", em outubro de 1981, e se separou alguns meses depois. Em 2005, Ari Up e Tessa Pollitt reviveram o The Slits e, em 2009, lançaram seu terceiro álbum, "Trapped Animal". A banda se separou definitivamente em 2010, após a morte de Ari Up (20 de outubro de 2010).
